Counseling for Children & Families

Childhood can be wonderful, but it can also be incredibly hard. Children face challenges that often feel much bigger on the inside than they appear on the outside. A friendship falls apart. Someone gets bullied. School becomes overwhelming. Parents separate. Anxiety takes hold. A child begins to doubt themselves, withdraw, or struggle in ways they never did before.

When this happens, children don’t always have the words to explain what they’re experiencing. Instead, parents may notice emotional outbursts, avoidance, self-criticism, anxiety, school difficulties, social challenges, changes in behavior, or just a growing sense that their child is struggling.

As a parent, it can be difficult to know how to help. You may find yourself wondering:

  • How can I best support my child right now?

  • What can I do when they seem overwhelmed, anxious, or discouraged?

  • How do I help them build confidence and resilience?

Counseling provides children with a space to better understand themselves, develop new skills, and work through challenges, while also offering parents support and guidance along the way.

Common Concerns I Help With

Children and families often seek support for:

  • Anxiety or excessive worry

  • Perfectionism and fear of making mistakes

  • Low confidence and self-esteem

  • Bullying and friendship difficulties

  • Social anxiety and relational challenges

  • School-related stress and challenges

  • Emotional overwhelm and dysregulation

  • ADHD-related concerns

  • Family conflicts, divorce, and life transitions

  • Trauma and difficult life experiences

  • Avoidance of situations, tasks, or experiences

My Approach

I believe children’s emotions and behaviors are meaningful.

Rather than viewing anxiety, emotional outbursts, avoidance, or perfectionism as problems to eliminate, I see them as signals that something inside a child needs understanding, support, and new skills.

Drawing from both Western psychology and Eastern and indigenous wisdom traditions, I believe children are naturally resourceful and wise and that counseling works best when it speaks their language. Children often communicate through play, imagination, stories, creativity, and metaphor long before they can fully explain what they're feeling.

Because of this, counseling doesn't always look like sitting in a chair and talking. Depending on your child's age and personality, sessions may include conversation, creative activities, storytelling, mindfulness, body awareness, and imaginative exercises.

Together, we work toward helping children:

  • Build confidence and self-trust

  • Understand what they’re feeling

  • Develop healthy coping skills

  • Address and reduce anxiety and self-doubt

  • Strengthen emotional regulation

  • Improve relationships

  • Participate more fully in life, even when things feel scary or uncertain

Parent Involvement

Children grow within relationships, and meaningful change often happens when parents are supported as well.

Parent sessions are a dedicated space for you to share what you’re noticing, process what’s been coming up for you, strengthen communication and connections within the household, and explore strategies that may be helpful at home.

Parenting a child who is struggling can bring up a lot: worry, helplessness, self-doubt, grief, frustration. Those experiences matter and deserve space of their own.

My approach is collaborative, not judgmental. My role is to listen and to be present with you, and my goal is to help you feel more confident and supported along the way.

How Counseling Can Help

Over time, counseling can help children develop a deeper sense of confidence and resilience. They begin to learn:

  • “I can recognize and move through difficult feelings and experiences.”

  • “I don’t have to believe every anxious thought.”

  • “Making mistakes doesn’t mean something is wrong with me.”

  • “I can trust myself.”

  • “I have the inner resources to do hard things.”

  • “I can ask for help when I need it.”

These skills become the foundation for resilience, confidence, and emotional well-being — long after counseling ends.

Getting Started

If you’re concerned about your child or wondering whether counseling might be helpful, I’d be happy to speak with you.

The first step is a complimentary parent consultation where we can discuss your concerns, answer questions, and determine whether we’re a good fit for working together.

Let's Work Together!

Sessions are held in person (Boulder, Colorado) or via Zoom.

My standard rate is $150 per session.

A limited number of sliding scale spots are available for those with financial need.

I do not accept health insurance or offer deferred payments. Payment is due in full at the time of service.

I recommend a minimum of three sessions to determine whether my approach is right for your child. The first three sessions are available as a package for $400.
